FAQs
Should my daughter play softball or baseball?
We see wide variety in how players find softball. Some start with us at 5 years old, some play baseball before switching over, and others don’t pick up a bat until they’re 10 or 12. We love all these paths. What you’ll find in Northwest Softball is a league that is unabashed in its focus on softball. Our volunteer leaders and coaches are dedicated to offering something equal in every way to what families love about baseball.
What if my daughter is nervous about softball?
During our registration periods in July/August (fall) and January (spring) we typically offer a new player clinic that is focused on giving players an on-ramp into the league. Our older players help to coach these clinics, which is always exciting for the younger players.
What's the difference between Fall and Spring seasons?
Fall typically has a more instructional focus, and is a great time for those who might be interested in trying softball to try it out. Spring is the main competitive season with a full lineup of games and tournaments, including postseason opportunities in June!
What are the age division cutoffs?
We follow PONY rules, which use August 31 as the cutoff date. Your child’s age on that date determines their division. Click here for the most current age chart.
When will we practice?
Teams will schedule practices on the same nights each week. Depending on the age level and season, you will have either one or two weekly practices. We have many players that are involved in other activities, so we will try our best to resolve practice conflicts.
When will we play games?
Most games will be held on Saturdays. For our older divisions, we will occasionally have Friday or Sunday games. We schedule some games against opponents from other leagues around the Austin metro. Example locations for away games are Lake Travis, Cedar Park, Oak Hill, or Manor.
What equipment does my player need?
- Glove - Required for each player. Make sure to try it on! It will be stiff at first, but will break in the more she plays.
- Softball pants - Required for each player. These are for game uniforms.
- Fielding mask - Required for each player.
- Batting helmet - Highly Recommended. We suggest each player have her own helmet, but will have extras for each team. Try it on to make sure the fit is snug and safe.
- Cleats - Highly recommended, especially for 10U and older. Plastic spikes only (no metal).
- Bat - Optional. All bats must bear the USA/ASA approved certification mark. Selection suggestions here. NO T-BALL BATS (even for tee ball players!).
How do I become a coach?
It's easy! On the registration page, click "Volunteer" to enroll. You'll have the opportunity to select Coach or Assistant Coach under the "Enrollment Type" category. Once we receive all registrations, we will reach out to those who have volunteered. Coaches must submit to a background check as well as attend mandatory training.
How else can I support Northwest Softball?
There are so many ways! We need volunteers to help as team parents, run concessions, help maintain the fields, and keep score at games. We also need to build our financial support throughout the community. So if you know of a business looking to give back, or have a matching program at your work, email us at sponsorship@nwsoftball.org.
